Sod and Seed Lawns
We have installed both pregrown sod lawns and seed lawns. There are benefits to both types, depending on your budget and the physical site.
A site with less sun would benefit from a sod lawn, as you are buying basically one-year-old plants with established root systems. Where there is less sun, the instant green of a sod lawn is truly beautiful. Because these lawn pieces are grown with intense chemical fertilizers, it can take several applications of quality organic fertilizers to overcome the transplant shock. They do green up nicely and are very beautiful.
A site with sufficient sun is suitable for direct seeding. A direct seeded lawn establishes roots more quickly than sod and is thinner and more fragile in its early stages, yet in the long haul they perform very well. We use locally adapted seed blends that have proven themselves over years of use.
With both types, adequate water and fertilizing are crucial for a beautiful-looking lawn. Weather on the Peninsula can go without rain for as much as 35-40 days, and this can severely stress any lawn. It's always important to make sure you have enough water.
